WPM Calculator — Gross, Net & Accuracy

Type once, calculate in a second. Works for any language because it counts characters, the way most typing tests do.

Short answer: Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM minus uncorrected errors per minute. Accuracy = correct characters ÷ total characters × 100.

Calculate your typing speed

–Gross WPM
–Net WPM
–Accuracy
–Level

Formulas — Gross WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy = (characters − errors) ÷ characters × 100. If you enter words instead, characters are estimated at 5 per word.

Why a "word" is five characters

Typing tests standardise a word as five characters (including spaces) so that long and short words count fairly. That is why the calculator divides characters by 5.

Gross vs net WPM

Gross WPM measures raw speed. Net WPM subtracts the penalty for uncorrected errors, so it reflects usable speed. Recruitment boards usually pass or fail on net speed or an accuracy threshold, and some count key depressions per hour instead — check your exam rules.
