How to Improve Typing Speed: a 4-Week Plan

Speed is a by-product of accuracy and rhythm. This plan takes about 15 minutes a day and works the same way in every language.

Short answer: Learn correct finger placement, practise 10–15 minutes daily, keep accuracy above 95% before pushing speed, and drill the keys you miss most. Most people see clear gains within 2–4 weeks.

Common mistakes that cap your speed

  • Looking at the keys instead of the screen.
  • Chasing speed while accuracy is below 95%.
  • Long, irregular sessions instead of short daily ones.
  • Ignoring the same few weak keys for weeks.

The 4-week typing speed plan

  1. Week 1 — Posture and finger placement. Sit upright, wrists floating, fingers on the home row. Use the on-screen finger guide and aim for 95%+ accuracy at any speed.
  2. Week 2 — Accuracy first. Slow down until errors almost vanish. Practise 10–15 minutes daily and review your Weak Spots report.
  3. Week 3 — Build rhythm. Take 5-minute tests. Aim for an even, steady pace rather than bursts. Do not look at the keyboard.
  4. Week 4 — Test under pressure. Take 10-minute exam-style tests, compare gross and net WPM and repeat your weakest drills.
